So what we need is a VHS Cover that can hold a DVD inside and plays your disc in your VCR.
Jokes aside, there is no technological solution for the individual. Regardless of what precautions you take, the video rental store uses plain DVDs that are easily scratched under normal use. Renting a movie these days is much more of a gamble than it was with the crummier VHS format.
In retrospect, the choice of an unprotected CD-like format for video is astonishingly dumb. People rent movies, so the packaging needs to account for the fact that 50 random people had the disc before you.
This is a very different use scenario than for compact discs, and it seems like a more protected format would have been obvious.
